Frass fertiliser is the combination of feed residues and insect droppings at the
end of their productive growth cycle. It is rich in fibres, chitin (insect skins),
organic material and minerals which help to restore the balance of soil.
Frass fertilizer is slightly alkaline and the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is around 13.9
with nitrifying bacteria converting nitrogen to nitrate which allows for better root
uptake. This nitrate assimilation also creates resilient plants in harsh conditions
such as drought, floods and land degradation.
Frass fertiliser increases water holding capacity, stimulates favourable soil
microbiome, protects plants (immune receptors in the chitin successfully block
pathogens from harming the plant) and helps produce healthy and hardy crops.
How to Apply Frass Fertilizer
Frass is a potent fertilizer and should be applied carefully so as not to overload
the plants with nutrients. While exact application can vary and should be
tested with your own plants, 1-3% is the range of application when mixing with
soil. E.g. You can prepare a 100kg blend containing 98kg soil and 2kg frass for
optimal results.
How to apply Frass Fertilizer
• Established Landscape Plants: For mature trees, shrubs, or
ornamental plants, top dressing may be preferred to minimize
root disturbance.
• Vegetable Gardens: Incorporating frass into the soil before
planting can provide an immediate nutrient boost to vegetable
crops.
• Annual Crops: For crops with a short growing season,
incorporating frass into the soil at the time of planting may be
more effective in meeting their nutrient requirements.
• Container Plants: For potted plants, blending frass into the
potting mix is generally recommended to ensure even nutrient
distribution.
FRASS FERTILIZER IN RESEARCH
Frass fertiliser has been extensively studied in Europe and in Kenya. ICIPE
based in Kenya has carried out many trials with several crops farmed locally
and found performance of Frass Fertilizer is equal or superior to all
alternatives tested.
Tomato
• Insect Fertiliser resulted in 63-71% higher yield compared to
commercial organic fertilizers
• Insect Fertiliser + NPK resulted in 22-135% higher yields
compared to NPK alone
French Bean
• Insect Fertiliser resulted in 52-65% higher yield compared to
commercial organic fertilizers
• Insect Fertiliser + NPK resulted in 20-27% higher yields
compared to NPK alone
Kale
• Insect Fertiliser resulted in higher observed yield compared
to commercial organic fertilizers
• Insect Fertiliser + NPK resulted in 38-50% higher yields
compared to NPK alone
Maize
• Insect Fertiliser resulted in 7% higher yield compared to
commercial organic fertilizers and 27% when compared to
urea fertilizers
